Raised on the island of Madeira, he joined the Sporting Clube de Portugal academy at the age of eleven and signed his first professional contract in 2002. Recruited by Manchester United the following summer, he revealed his talent during Euro 2004 at only 19 years old with Portugal. He had an excellent 2007-2008 season with Manchester United, winning the Premier League and the Champions League. In 2009, he was the subject of the highest transfer in the history of football (94 million euros), when he left the Red Devils for Real Madrid. He won numerous trophies with the Madrid club, including the Spanish Championship and four times the Champions League between 2014 and 2018. Following this last success, he left Real Madrid after nine seasons at the club for Juventus Turin. His Italian adventure is punctuated by two titles of Italian champions but three successive eliminations in the Champions League. In 2021 he returned to Manchester United where he finished as the team's top scorer in his first season before being dismissed in December 2022 after publicly criticizing the club. He then signed with the Saudi club Al-Nassr FC for a record contract. In selection, he is the most capped player, the top scorer and one of the decisive players in Portugal, which won its very first international title by beating France in the final of Euro 2016 then the League of Nations in 2019 against the Netherlands.
